Waste Watch — Saran District

Solid waste management is the systematic collection, segregation, transportation, processing, recycling, treatment, and safe disposal of solid waste generated by households, industries, commercial establishments, and institutions. Its main objective is to protect public health and the environment while promoting resource recovery.

Chapra Municipal Corporation promotes four way segragation of wastes at source- wet (biodegradable), dry (recyclable), sanitary, and special care waste/hazardous waste.

Problems and Challenges

  • Poor Source Segregation: Four-way segregation (wet, dry, sanitary & hazardous waste) remains difficult due to low awareness and compliance.
  • Inadequate Infrastructure: Shortage of separate collection vehicles, MRFs and scientific sanitary landfills.
  • Untreated Dumping: Lack of adequate processing facilities leads to continued dumping of untreated waste.
  • Limited Public Participation: Inconsistent participation in segregation, composting and recycling.
  • Slow Behavioural Change: Awareness campaigns have not yet resulted in sustained behavioural change.
  • Digital Monitoring Gaps: Limited IT infrastructure, trained manpower and reliable data systems in local bodies.
